Dana Lee Cole has been a member of Court One for about
10 years. She lives in East Lansing and is the Vice
President of Strategic Initiatives for the Michigan
Economic Development Corporation, the arm of
state government which works to attract and grow businesses
in the state. Dana works out at Court One several
times each week.
In October 1993, Dana wanted to drop some weight and was
feeling lethargic. A friend advised her to join Court
One and take advantage of the numerous aerobic classes
available. Attending classes three times a week provided
an energy boost, but it was not until Dana began working
with personal trainer Keri Morrison in November
1998 that she really began to see dramatic results.
Dana works on strength training with Keri once every two
to four weeks and then on her own two to three times each
week. She also does at least 30 minutes of cardio three
to four times a week. Over the past 5 years, Dana's body
fat has decreased from 42% to 18%. Last year she began
focusing on her eating habits-and lost 50 pounds by joining
Weight Watchers.
"I could never had made this much progress without
the help of Keri," says Dana. "She has been
very supportive of my efforts and has helped me design
a program that keeps me motivated. She keeps mixing it
up so I don't get bored."
"Combining an exercise program with better eating
habits has really had a big impact on my life," adds
Dana. "I have more energy and eel more confident
about reaching goals that I have set for myself."

A
series of chance events resulted in my current invigorating
and relaxing physical workouts at Court One. This path
to Court One started when I mentioned to a friend that
found it difficult to fit swimming into my work schedule.
He described Court One's facilities and suggested that
I explore all that Court One had to offer. I did and
ended up becoming a member.
Although the pool's extensive availability permitted
a more regular swim schedule, I started experiencing
shoulder pain after a couple of years. So I switched
to walking on a treadmill as my primary form of exercise,
but some existing knee pain increased over time. When
it started to wake me up during the night, I started
thinking that this was something I would have to accept
as a normal part of the aging process. But while I was
using the treadmill, I observed the wide range of ages
of the other members using the equipment. It did not
look like the only individuals working out were under
30. The regulars seemed to enjoy what they were doing,
so I started thinking about developing a more organized
exercise program for myself. For awhile I was only thinking
about it. During this time I continued to experience
increased knee pain and overall stiffness. Finally, I
reached the point that I was reluctant to use stairs
unless I could grip the railing. One evening at intermission
during a music performance, I found that the prolonged
sitting made me so stiff I could not move after I stood
up. There I saw someone using a walker and I realized
that I was thinking that it would be nice to have a walker.
One day at Court One I happened to read the professional
education and interests of the physical trainers on the
staff. Although it did not immediately hit me that this
was an opportunity to develop a safe but efficient exercise
program, it did get me to start thinking about doing
so.
I noticed several articles appeared in The New York
Times and The State Journal describing the
benefits of exercise, the role of physical trainers,
and the personal experience of individuals in life-style
improvement. Eventually, I made an appointment with
Keri Morrison and have benefited from her guidance
and, on occasion, that of several of the other trainers.
Luckily, I knew that I should not expect immediate
results, but after just a few sessions I started to
notice some improvement. There was a significant decrease
in pain in my shoulder and knee and an increased feeling
of well-being.
So I continue to this day with Keri. It most definitely
is a worthwhile investment. My only regret is that I
had not started earlier. I highly recommend the use of
the Court One personal training staff to others.

"Meeting weekly with my personal trainer has made me
more physically fit and stronger than I ever been. I
am able to do things now that otherwise would have been
impossible. My trainer also helped me solve physical
problems that I didn't know I had, which could otherwise
had serious consequences. I amazed and very happy that
I made this commitment to health."

"I couldn't be happier with the personal training program
at Court One. I was able to avoid shoulder surgery and
regain full range of motion even though my doctors were
recommending surgical procedures. In addition, the progress
you can make in terms of weight control, energy level,
and muscle tone is really impressive when done correctly.
I would recommend the program to every Court One member."
-Greg Pell
"After bypass surgery and cardiac rehab, I was looking
for new fitness challenges. I found a Court One personal
trainer with a background in rehab and fitness. She has
challenged me in ways that continue to meet my needs.
I see a lot of improvement and my doctors are impressed."
-John Schwille
"The word professional should be the keyword for Court
One's personal trainers. My trainers have called my doctor
to make sure the program they designed for me was safe
and would not cause further injury. That is a professional
who takes their job seriously and truly cares about their
client's physical condition. A common thread that connects
Court One trainers is their willingness to modify exercises
so that can specifically meet the needs of the client."
-Lynne Shapiro
"My personal trainer has done a great job of finding
my weaknesses. I am a 75 year-old ski and road bike racer.
Squats and lunges are not my favorite, but I am seeing
great improvements in all areas."
